Describe your most memorable vacation.
The most memorable vacation I ever had was during the summer of my freshman year in high school. I was invited to be one of the escorts for the 18 roses segment of my cousin’s debut. While in the United States, a sweet 16 is a big celebration, in the Philippines, it’s the 18th birthday that holds special significance. We traveled to their region, which was quite far from ours, and my older cousin and I went a week ahead of the rest of our family due to our roles in the debut.
We often visited this place for vacations, as they always offered space for us to stay, whether it be for two days or even a week. When we arrived at their home, I was thrilled to discover they had a recording studio. They allowed local bands and singers to record their music there. I was ecstatic to play an electric guitar for the first time, as the studio was fully equipped with a complete set of instruments. My older cousin, who also played instruments at their church, was just as excited. We had a fantastic time practicing together.
A couple of days later, two more older cousins arrived, and we spent hours jamming with our favorite songs, although our repertoire was limited to what we could find in songbooks. There was no mobile internet back then, but it still felt amazing as a teenager. We explored the city, visited markets since there were no malls yet, and even found a PlayStation rental place where we played some games. It was an awesome experience, and I felt a sense of independence with none of my parents around.
This vacation was a pivotal moment in my life. It sparked my love for music and playing the guitar, and it helped me appreciate how music genres evolve over time. The joy and freedom I felt during that trip have stayed with me, making it the most memorable vacation I’ve ever had.
Is that a vacation to you?
Yes, that’s a kind of vacation for me. Vacation is not only for outdoors, beaches, camping, leisure or trips to beautiful places. It’s a form of exploration, discovery, mentally and physically. I was at peace discovering my self and my passion.
