Why I Love Where I Live

What do you love about where you live?

Living in the Philippines has always been a unique experience that I cherish deeply. Born and raised as a Filipino, I’ve come to appreciate the vibrant tapestry of life in this archipelago, a place where diverse ethnicities converge yet share a unified culture. This diversity is one of the key reasons why I love where I live.

The Filipino Spirit

The Philippines is a country defined by its rich cultural heritage, where each region boasts its own distinct traditions, languages, and customs. Yet, amidst this diversity, there’s a common thread that binds us all—a sense of togetherness, a love for family, and a deep respect for our roots. We are a people who take pride in being family-oriented. For us, family isn’t just limited to blood relations; it’s an extended circle of friends, neighbors, and even colleagues. This strong sense of community is undoubtedly one of the reasons why I love where I live.

The Food: Fresh, Affordable, and Delicious

Another reason why I love where I live is the accessibility to fresh, affordable, and delectable food. Whether it’s succulent seafood straight from the ocean, organic vegetables harvested from local farms, or meat that’s always fresh, food in the Philippines is a delight for the senses. We Filipinos take our meals seriously, and food is often at the center of our gatherings, celebrations, and even our day-to-day lives. The availability of fresh ingredients at such reasonable prices is a privilege that I deeply appreciate.

Balancing Independence and Dependence

Filipinos are known for their resilience and independence. We have an innate ability to adapt to different situations, to stand on our own feet, and to face challenges head-on. However, we also understand the value of dependence—on family, friends, and the broader community. This balance of independence and a love for dependence is yet another reason why I love where I live. We find strength not just within ourselves but in our relationships with others, creating a support system that is both unique and enduring.

Challenges of Living in the Philippines

Of course, life in the Philippines isn’t without its challenges. The warm climate, which can be quite enjoyable most of the year, has become increasingly hot in recent times due to climate change. Additionally, while the cost of living is relatively low, salaries are also lower compared to many other countries. This economic reality is why so many Filipinos seek opportunities abroad, aiming to provide better lives for their families and to free themselves from financial burdens.

As a freelance worker, I’ve been fortunate enough to accept work outsourced from abroad. (Happy kidding, to anyone wanting to hire me!) This opportunity allows me to stay in the Philippines, close to the people and the culture I love, while still being able to earn a living that supports my needs.

Conclusion

In the end, despite the challenges, there’s no place I’d rather call home. The sense of community, the rich cultural tapestry, the fresh and affordable food, and the unique balance of independence and dependence all contribute to the many reasons why I love where I live. The Philippines, with all its beauty and complexities, will always be where my heart is.
